Above the dome, the rising lantern houses the viewing platform. At a height of 67 metres, visitors can enjoy a unique view over the city of Dresden and its surroundings. Depending on the weather, the view extends as far as the Dresden Heath in the north, the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the east, the Ore Mountains in the south and Meissen in the west.

The ascent itself is an experience in itself. In stair tower G, 174 steps lead up to a height of 29 metres. Thanks to large glass windows, guests can look down into the church interior and up at the paintings on the inner dome. The path continues via narrow stairs to the so-called spiral ramp, a continuously ascending spiral walkway. On it, guests circle the outer dome two and a half times. This section is strenuous: after all, the path, formerly used as a ‘donkey walk’ and named accordingly, has a gradient of 14 percent. Via two further flights of stairs – one of which is a steep ladder staircase – visitors reach the viewing platform at a height of 67 metres. There, a unique view of Dresden and the surrounding area opens up.
