In 1785, the 25-year-old Friedrich Schiller also spent carefree summer weeks here. After a period of pressing worries, he found friendship, recognition and active support from kindred spirits in Gohlis. In one fell swoop, the young poet's previously gloomy world seemed to be bathed in bright light. Here, the jubilation over new perspectives inspired him to write his song ‘An die Freude’ (To Joy), his most popular verses to this day.

The building, which housed the Leipzig District Administration for State Security for 40 years, now houses the Memorial Museum in the ‘Runde Ecke’ (Round Corner). In the former offices of the Stasi officers, visitors can learn about the function, working methods and history of the MfS. The citizens' committee has attempted to preserve the authentic environment as far as possible in order to give visitors an idea of the working atmosphere that prevailed in the ‘Runde Ecke’ until 1989. Linoleum flooring, yellow-brown wallpaper, security bars on the doors and windows, cable ducts and old radiators can still be seen throughout the museum.

The permanent exhibition ‘Stasi – Power and Banality’ provides information exclusively in German.
Foreign visitors can explore the exhibition with an audio guide in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Dutch and Arabic. It guides visitors through the rooms and, over the course of an hour, provides interesting facts about the history, structure and working methods of the Stasi. International guests at the memorial site thus gain an overview of the main themes as well as the work tools on display – often specially made for the Stasi – photos and documents.

In order to give visitors a more detailed understanding of the enormous scale of this once intimidating seat of dictatorship, the memorial museum in the ‘Runde Ecke’ offers a special tour of the building and grounds called ‘Stasi intern’. This allows visitors to see rooms that are otherwise inaccessible – away from the exhibition rooms – and to better connect the dimensions of the building with the historical events that took place there.
From the basement to the top floor, visitors can see the bunkered shelters in the second basement for use in the event of war, the waiting area of the Stasi's own polyclinic and the MfS's bowling alley, among other things. Remnants of the destruction of files can also be discovered.

The canoe park has a competition course and a training course.
